Context and Overview
In the exploration of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems, we conducted a thorough evaluation of existing solutions in the market. However, it became evident that many available EMR systems did not meet the desired standards of user-friendliness and ease of use.Recognizing the need for a system that seamlessly integrates with healthcare workflows and offers additional functionalities, such as video chat capabilities, we made the strategic decision to build our own EMR system. This decision was driven by the commitment to overcome the limitations observed in other systems and to develop a tailored EMR platform that meets the usability needs of our healthcare practitioners, ensuring a more efficient and intuitive experience.
Research and User Interviews
In close collaboration with our product team, we conducted thorough research and extensive user interviews with healthcare professionals. This allowed us to gain profound insights into their workflows, challenges, and preferences. By understanding the nuances of their daily practices, we could tailor the design of the EMR system to precisely meet their needs, ensuring solutions that enhances efficiency and usability in the complex context of medical care.
Challenges and solutions
One of the main challenges in this project was the vast amount of information that needs to be displayed to healthcare professionals when they see a patient. Navigating through complex medical data and presenting it in a way that is both visually accessible and logically organized posed a significant challenge. We focused on creating an interface that not only accommodated the complexity of healthcare information but also ensured that our healthcare professionals could effortlessly access and interpret crucial data during their daily workflows.
To address the challenges we came up with a three-part layout:
Left Section - Patient's Information Overview: This section provides a comprehensive overview of the patient's information, ensuring quick access to vital details without overwhelming the user. If additional information is needed, users can drill down into this section. We prioritized giving an overview first, allowing the doctor to decide what specific patient details are relevant for the current visit.
Middle Section - Data Entry for Current Visit: In this section we streamlined and optimized the interface to ensure that entering new information during a patient visit was efficient and aligned with the natural progression of the healthcare professional's tasks, allowing clinicians to input necessary data with minimal disruption to their established practices.
Right Section - Video and Notifications: The right section is dedicated to video functionality and notifications. Integrating video chat capabilities into this distinct area ensures a seamless and focused virtual consultation experience. Notifications are strategically placed for immediate attention without disrupting the overall workflow.
